The Chief Medical Officer, PHMG serves as a member of the PHMG executive team and participates in the design and development of the PHMG strategic plan and vision. Works in collaboration with network and system leaders to lead quality, patient safety and patient experience of care, collaborates with key stakeholders to ensure the facilities/services stay compliant with regulatory requirements.

Responsible for the integration of clinical quality and demonstrated best practices into clinical operations. Evaluates the development of new and continuation of existing services, investigating future clinical technologies/information systems and evaluating their impact on providers' practices, patient safety and patient experience. Creates a patient-centered environment that is highly satisfying to providers and caregivers.

Responsible for managing medical community and interdepartmental relations, coaching/mentoring physician and clinician leaders and managing teams to improve team leadership effectiveness. Responsible for developing clinician and physician relationships and clinical integration activity across PeaceHealth Medical Group. Participates in and is a member of the system Physician Executive Council as well as the PHMG Leadership Team. Partners with acute-care CMOs in support of Quality, Safety, and CPE activities through appropriate and timely information sharing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Leads clinical quality improvement, patient safety and regulatory and accreditation projects/concerns within assigned communities.
  2. In conjunction with system colleagues and network executive teams; ensures established medical practices express PeaceHealth mission, vision and organizational standards.
  3. Participates in the planning, organization, and administration of general and medical policies and procedures in the hospital or medical group by membership in a variety of committees.
  4. In collaboration with other leaders, assists as needed to remove barriers achieving and maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements through a system wide approach. Assists with preventative and corrective action planning when medical provider support is needed.
  5. Chairs the PHMG System Quality Committee.
  6. Actively engages in patient safety support and initiatives, root cause analysis as appropriate, and assuring credible action plans are resourced and completed. Participates in patient safety committees to share best practices and ensure follow up in the organization.
  7. Ensures clinical quality and practices are aligned with fiscal responsibility. Ensures achievement of the organization’s financial targets related to quality, safety, and clinical practice.
  8. Supports the development of protocols for high risk and/or high-volume disease processes to eliminate unnecessary variation and foster standardized approaches.
  9. Provides mentoring, performance reviews and oversight to appointed/employed service line medical directors. Works with employed Service Line Medical Directors to ensure each service line has an annual improvement plan, is appropriately staffed with the right clinician mix and participates in appropriate accountability initiatives/feedback process to achieve mutually agreed upon service line goals.
  10. Advocates for physicians and clinicians and practices at all levels of the community and organization. Helps other CMOs and medical directors to keep the flow of important information intact through the appropriate committee and department structures.
  11. Works collaboratively with PHMG leaders, CFO and System Board to establish, implement, monitor and improve the PHMG clinician compensation plan. Works collaboratively with network and system leaders to establish effective clinician governance model for service lines and PHMG.
  12. Participates in annual PHMG and Service Line strategic and operational planning in conjunction with annual strategic and operational planning for PH system.
  13. Leads the design of assigned functional teams and care improvement approaches to further PeaceHealth mission. Ensures organizational standards and performance outcomes.
  14. Provides mentoring, performance reviews and oversight to appointed/employed service line medical directors and PHMG Network CMOs.
  15. Provides oversight and ensures a rigorous PHMG peer review process.
  16. Functions as the Patient Safety Officer for assigned area by communicating regularly with the key stakeholders and by leading the integrated patient safety program.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Accredited School of Medicine and an accredited residency program in a medical or clinical specialty, is required. 
  • Master's Degree Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or secondary college education in a business or health administration field, is preferred. 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 10 years high level healthcare leadership experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years recent clinical practice experience.
  • Experience leading/partnering in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Successful experience with redesign or process work which includes community or medical group wide implementation.

CREDENTIALS

  • Medical Doctor - Washington or Oregon, required upon hire. 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Strong understanding of principals of patient-centered care, physician compensation systems, medical technology, including electronic medical records, and quality/service improvement strategies.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to form collaborative relationships, both within the organization and in the community.
  • Capable of maintaining strict confidentiality when dealing with sensitive medical-legal and professional subjects.
  • Ability to facilitate resolution of conflicts and grievances, handling highly charged problems and situations in a calm and objective manner.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Up to date knowledge of changes in healthcare, emerging clinical methodologies and standards.

The salary range for this job opening at PeaceHealth is $469,000 – $564,600. The hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to education, training, work experience, seniority, etc.

PeaceHealth requires a completed Primary Vaccine Series (e.g., 2 dose monovalent Pfizer, Moderna or Novavax series or 1 dose J&J vaccine series) or be Up to Date (receiving the most recent Pfizer/Moderna bivalent vaccine/booster) for COVID-19 vaccination prior to their start date. PeaceHealth has a medical and religious exemption request process for those that are unable to receive the COVID-19 primary vaccine series due to medical/religious reasons. For caregivers that will be working in Oregon there is a personal vaccine exemption form that may be requested.
