Foundation leader responsible for directing the fundraising activities and managing the Whatcom Hospice foundation Board of Directors and raising funds to support the mission of Whatcom Hospice Foundation. As the strategic leader, the Executive Director will work with executive leadership locally and across the network to develop the strategic direction of the fundraising program. The foundation leader will be responsible for budget oversight and ensuring policy compliance. Works closely with foundation board members to maximize their potential in giving of their time, talent, and financial resources to Whatcom Hospice. Partners with Whatcom Hospice Foundation and PeaceHealth administrators, medical physicians, and caregivers to identify, cultivate and steward donors. Manages direct line staff and carries a major gift portfolio. Recognizes diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of their work and in guiding the board of director’s efforts in DEI initiatives. Whatcom Hospice Foundation is a nonprofit organization and contracts with PeaceHealth for its philanthropy caregivers. Therefore, the Executive Director of Whatcom Hospice is employed by PeaceHealth in support of the Whatcom Hospice Foundation. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the philanthropic sector, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Strategic Leadership: Passion for the foundations mission and goals. Strong sense of integrity and ethics. Develop and implement the foundation's strategic plan, ensuring that it aligns with our mission and goals. 
  2. Board Relations: Build and maintain relationships with the board of directors, ensuring that they are informed and engaged in the foundation's work. 
  3. Communications: Serve as the primary spokesperson for the foundation, developing and implementing a communications strategy to promote our mission and work. 
  4. Spearheads Fundraising - Develop and implement major gift fundraising programs and campaigns to meet annual financial goals.
  5. Actively recruit individuals to serve on the Whatcom Hospice Foundation Board of Directors who are prominent and responsible community and business leaders interested in in making significant gifts and raising funds in support of the strategic plan.
  6. Develops and maintains relationships with physicians, hospice administrators, caregivers, and grateful patients to advance Whatcom Hospice Foundation’s mission, vision, and strategic plan with the goal of raising significant philanthropic funds.
  7. Develops and maintain a high value donor portfolio and secure gifts through qualifying cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding as appropriate. Responsible for working with foundations, corporations, and individuals.
  8. Designs and delivers written and verbal presentations to donors and prospects to raise the profile of the foundation within the local community and make new connections for philanthropy.
  9. Manages day-to-day operations of foundation, supervising staff and directing activities and projects which includes ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures. Partner closely with partners in legal, compliance and finance.
  10. Strategic leader responsible for developing annual business plans and along-range strategic plan to support the goals established in the PeaceHealth philanthropic strategic plan.
  11. Responsible for local implementation of a donor stewardship program and manage donor rounding program.
  12. As a member of the network leadership team and the larger PeaceHealth philanthropy team, participate in team meetings, strategy sessions, trainings, and other opportunities for collaboration.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree required in related field and/or equivalent experience and training.
  • Master's Degree Preferred.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible fundraising experience or minimum of 7 years of equivalent experience
  • Experience managing staff and/or volunteers within a philanthropy setting.
  • Record of securing six and seven figure gifts.

CREDENTIALS

  • Required within 2 years, Certified Fund-Raising Executive.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Ability to travel within assigned network and occasionally to other locations in the PeaceHealth service area.
  • In-depth and up-to-date knowledge of fundraising practices.
  • Ability to secure leadership gifts ($1 million +).
  • Ability to recruit and manage key volunteers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with staff, hospital management, community leaders, hospital contributors and potential contributors in both professional and social settings.
  • Ability to work efficiently and responsibly in an environment with multiple work demands, short time frames and minimum supervision.
  • Leadership in building a team and an organization that will assume responsibility and accountability for achieving both the mission and financial/operational objectives of the Foundation.
  • Ability to travel within assigned network and occasionally to other locations in the PeaceHealth service area.
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain good working relationships with diverse groups, including caregivers, physicians, donors, boards, volunteers, and administrators.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and meticulous attention to detail; the ability to set, negotiate, and meet priorities and produce high-quality work under multiple deadline pressure and within a busy environment.
  • Team player who has a commitment to, upholding and demonstrating the values of PeaceHealth (Stewardship, Communication, Respect, Collaboration).
  • Ability to embrace the fundraising ethics and metrics used by PeaceHealth philanthropy.

The salary range for this job opening at PeaceHealth is $116,230 – $183,706. The hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to education, training, work experience, seniority, etc.

PeaceHealth requires a completed Primary Vaccine Series (e.g., 2 dose monovalent Pfizer, Moderna or Novavax series or 1 dose J&J vaccine series) or be Up to Date (receiving the most recent Pfizer/Moderna bivalent vaccine/booster) for COVID-19 vaccination prior to their start date. PeaceHealth has a medical and religious exemption request process for those that are unable to receive the COVID-19 primary vaccine series due to medical/religious reasons. For caregivers that will be working in Oregon there is a personal vaccine exemption form that may be requested.
